Did You Know?

➢ Those who are regularly active have a higher chance of living longer than those who are not very active.1

➢ Physical activity can improve brain health and mental wellbeing.1

➢ Students who are physically active tend to have improved grades, higher school attendance, sharper memory, and better concentration.2

➢ Regular physical activity can also help you sleep better and improve your immune system, so you get sick less.3

➢ Exercise can reduce the fall rate by 23% in older adults and significantly reduce the risk of fall injuries.

Physical Activity

Physical activity is any body movement that works your muscles and requires more energy than resting.

Being physically active is one of the best ways to keep your heart and lungs healthy. Many Americans are not active. However, the good news is that even a modest amount of physical activity is good for your health. The more active you are, the more you will benefit.

Physical activity does not require going to the gym and it does not have to be a chore. Instead, it can be your favorite hobbies or activities the whole family can do, such as:

  • Hiking
  • Dog-Walking
  • Dancing
  • Yoga
  • Biking
  • Swimming

All these types of activity can help you lose weight, strengthen your heart, improve your circulation, build muscle, increase strength and endurance, and boost your metabolism.

Before Getting Started

Before you start engaging in physical activity and moving toward a healthier life, speak with your health care provider, especially if you have any medical conditions or have a low fitness level. Getting a physical exam before starting can help you learn what your limitations are or should be.

Stretching (before and after) is important and can help your body prepare for exercise and avoid a serious injury. Warming up the body and stretching has been shown to improve your blood pressure and heart rate as well as maximize your overall mobility, especially as you age. Activities like yoga and tai chi are great for improving mobility, relieving stress, and can give you the inspiration to begin a workout.

If you plan to be active at a facility like a gym or community center, consider checking with your insurance provider and/or employer to see how they may support physical activity (e.g., assist with cost).
