Job Seekers

The Suffolk County One-Stop Employment Center is designed to support you in your job search. Center programs and services may be accessed in Hauppauge and Riverhead. Employment Center facilities and services undergo continual modification, expansion and improvement. Below is a listing and description of resources currently available.

Center Programs and Services

Career Workshops

Career Workshops are offered on a regularly scheduled basis. Workshops offer an opportunity for small gatherings, usually less than fifteen people, under the guidance of a professional facilitator, to explore various topics which are of particular interest to job seekers. Career Workshop schedules are available at all times at the front desk in the Reception area. We welcome suggestions from our customers for additional workshop topics.

Computer Training

Short-term training is available in various Microsoft software applications.

Copiers

Photocopiers are ready at all times for your use. If you need help with any of your copying needs, we shall be pleased to accommodate you.

Disability Accommodations

The Suffolk County Workforce Investment Board and NYS ACCES/VR have joined together to assist people with disabilities access One-Stop Employment Center resources and services. Information and referral to community organizations may be provided. Disability Resource Coordinator is on-site.

Fax Machines

Fax machines are available for your use. The fax machines provide access throughout the continental United States.

GED/ESL Access

In cooperation with Suffolk County Community College, enrollment in high school equivalency diploma and English as a Second Language classes is available.

Internet & Multimedia

Internet access is provided at every PC workstation. Multimedia PC stations include programs that provide nationwide telephone and fax directories, nationwide road maps, The American Business Disc, D & B Regional Business Directory, Health and Medical Yellow Pages, 2 Million Fax Numbers, 800 Number Phone Directory and the Occupational Outlook Handbook on CD ROM. Programs are activated through CD-ROM sign out on the daily usage log available at the Help Desk.

Job Bank

Access is provided to two distinct, up-to-date, job list databases. The listings, which include a wide variety of jobs from all parts of the country, are accessible on terminals located in our Job Bank room. Additional job listings are available on hard copy at Civil Service.

Job Fairs

Employers often recruit on-site at the Employment Center. Dress appropriately and bring your resume.

Partner Agency Access

One-Stop and "no wrong door" philosophies are put into practice by the presence of many partners in residence at the Employment Center. They include the Suffolk County Office of the Aging, the New York State Department of Labor and Job Corps. Representatives from Suffolk County Community College are able to enroll customers on-site through an Internet application system, and representatives from New York State Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID) are available. A New York State Veterans representative may also be consulted at the Employment Center.

Personal Computer Stations

There are many personal computers available for your use. Each PC is in its own private workstation. All computers are loaded with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access. Designated PC’s provide access to Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing© tutorial. The first time you use a PC, we will provide you with your own personal diskette. At the close of each PC session, your diskette will be filed so that it will be available to you when you return. This system safeguards the confidentiality of your information. Select workstations are equipped with Assistive Technology and Laptop hookups are available.

Phone Bank

The telephone bank is available to you for networking and to call prospective employers. We provide at no cost, calling capability to anywhere in the United States.

Reference Material

The Employment Center maintains an ever-growing library of books and newspapers. Please let us know if there are any books that you would like made available. We will make every effort to obtain them.

Suggestion Box

A suggestion box is provided at the Employment Center, making it easier for customers to share their ideas with us. You may also e-mail comments and suggestions to sc.dol@suffolkcountyny.gov

Video Library

The Center maintains an extensive library of video program presentations. Our video resources cover a wide variety of workforce topics of interest to both experienced and first-time job seekers. Stand alone video stations allow for individual viewing.

Native American Indians

Career assessment and planning, job search, placement assistance, and career training for Native American Indians that are unemployed or underemployed. Must meet eligibility requirements and provide documentation of enrollment in a State or federally recognized tribe (self, parents, grandparents).
