YAPHANK, NY-- The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Veterans Re-entry Task Force hosted a ceremony today at the Yaphank Correctional Facility to pay tribute to Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco.  Among the attendees were State Senator Tom Croci and Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay,   as well as mentors from the Vietnam Veterans of America (Chapter 11, Farmingville), including Ralph Zanchelli and Frank D’Aversa, who presented Sheriff DeMarco with a letter of appreciation and plaque from the Task Force.

Sheriff DeMarco thanked the members of the Task Force for their ongoing commitment to incarcerated Veterans, many of whom have service-related PTSD.  He also conveyed special appreciation for the Vietnam Veterans standing beside him at today’s ceremony: “Our Vietnam Veterans are a distinguished and loyal group of men and women who went through a very difficult time in our nation’s history, but continue live by their motto, ‘Never again will one generation of veterans abandon another’.”

The Veterans Re-entry Task Force meets quarterly to plan for transitional services for incarcerated Veterans.  Sheriff DeMarco started the program in 2016 to address the re-entry needs of veterans returning to society after a period of incarceration at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility. Veterans live in a separate unit of the Facility and engage in programs such as substance abuse recovery, stress reduction, vocational planning, and ongoing mentoring.
