Canoeists wishing to explore Suffolk County Park waterways will find a wide diversity of opportunities available from the scenic Carmans River in Southaven County Park to Big Reed Pond in Theodore Roosevelt County Park. Certain restrictions and fees may be in place. Contact the park of your choice or park administration office at (631) 854-4949 for information. A treasure of possibilities await the adventurous paddler.
Privately owned canoes may be launched at Southaven and Theodore Roosevelt County Parks, and at certain points along the Peconic and Nissequogue Rivers.
Southaven County Park - Brookhaven (631) 854-1414 While no canoe launching is permitted on the lake, canoeists may travel the Carmans River from a launch site on Yaphank Avenue. If you need transportation assistance or wish to rent a canoe, contact our park canoe rental agent, Glacier Bay Sports (631) 286-0567. Canoeing is permitted Thursday - Sunday, May - Mid October. Weekends only January - Mid March. (Fee) Fishing from canoes is prohibited.
Theodore Roosevelt County Park - Montauk (631) 852-7878 "Big Reed" Pond, located off East Lake Drive is not only noted for its fishing opportunities, but also for canoeing and kayaking. Check in at Third House (Park Office.) No rentals available - bring your own canoe or kayak.
Peconic River Canoe Launch
- Riverhead (631) 854-4949 This new launching site was made possible through the Peconic Estuary Improvement Project that was conducted by the New York State Department of Transportation. This site provides direct access for canoe/kayak enthusiasts to the Peconic River. Directions: LIE east to Exit 72 (Route 25 East). The launch is located approximately 1.3 miles on Route 25 (after the Tanger Outlet and Forge Road), on the right hand side.
