On Thursday, November 19th Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco will unveil the new “Test, Don’t Guess” Drug Test Kit Program- an awareness program aimed at empowering parents to engage in active intervention if they suspect their children of having a drug problem.

At approximately 5:00 a.m. today, Deputy Sheriff Vincent Aparicio arrested Manuel Mendez, d.o.b. 5/31/74, of Hackensack, New Jersey, following a 911 call reporting a minivan traveling at a high rate of speed westbound in the eastbound lanes of Sunrise Highway, preventing a tragic outcome.

The New York State Constitution has for many years prohibited a sentenced inmate from working, where his or her work is “contracted, given or sold” to anyone. While this provision does not prevent inmates from working for the State or any municipality, most thought inmates who volunteered to be on supervised work crews could be sent to not-for-profit agencies also, since these activities were considered part of the inmate’s rehabilitation program, and not any form of required or compensated labor. However, a few years ago, the State Commission of Correction –which is the State agency that oversees all correctional facilities in New York State- questioned the practice of allowing inmates to work at not-for-profit agencies, and suggested that the Constitution be clarified.

DeMarco announced today that the U.S. Department of Justice has awarded Suffolk County $2,559,573 for participation in the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP) for the year 2008. A Quogue woman was arrested Thursday night after Air National Guard Officials called the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office to report a woman taking pictures of both the air base and surrounding airport property. On Thursday June 11th, Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco joined with the New York State Sheriffs’ Association Institute in honoring two local students who show promise as future criminal justice leaders. The students, David O’Brien and Jeffrey Campbell, were selected from Suffolk County Community College to receive the New York State Sheriffs’ Association Institute’s 2009 Criminal Justice Scholarship for their academic excellence and their dedicated pursuit of a career in the field of criminal justice. The students were each awarded a scholarship check in the amount of $500.

A Yaphank man was arrested by Sheriff’s Deputies last night near Exit 57 on the Long Island Expressway following a 911 report of a naked man on the highway. Multiple sightings of the subject have been reported over the last nine days along the L.I. Expressway between Exits 57 and 68. Initial investigation showed a developing pattern in the sightings,and Deputies were on alert when the latest call came in at 7:45 p.m. on Thursday. The subject was spotted coming out of the woods and attempted to flee in a 2004 Jeep westbound on eastbound service road. The subject was stopped and arrested at the scene.

Longmont, Colorado—Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office completed participation in the 96th session of the National Sheriffs’ Institute (NSI) held in Longmont, Colorado, May 17-23, 2009. All expenses were paid for by the U.S. Department of Justice. The NSI is the only national executive development program designed for sheriffs. It is co-sponsored by the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) and the National Institute of Corrections (NIC).

At 6:05 a.m. today Deputy Sheriff Michael Brecht of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office observed what appeared to be a police officer in an unmarked Crown Victoria and a woman in a minivan stopped on the Long Island Expressway. Further investigation revealed that the “Officer” was not a police officer at all, resulting in the arrest of the subject, Juan Santiago, d.o.b. 5/29/69, of Middle Island.

He has been charged with D.W.I. and is due to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip today.

The Iris Scan system, developed by SecuriMetric Inc. significantly cuts down the ability of criminals to use false names or aliases. Furthermore, the new system speeds up the process of discharging inmates from the jail and reduces the possibility of human error, eliminating the possibility of an inmates erroneous release. The objective of the new system is to identify inmates quickly, reliably and efficiently.

Mario DePaola, d.o.b. 1/5/60, was arrested on Friday, March 28, 2008, following a cooperative effort between the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. Mr. DePaola has been posted on the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Dead Beat Parent Most Wanted List, owing over $51,000 in support payments.

Sheriff DeMarco addressed the Public Safety Committee Thursday at the Suffolk County Legislature to highlight the tremendous success of the criminal alien program inside the Suffolk Jail System. The criminal alien program was created to ensure that illegal aliens who commit crimes in Suffolk County are turned over to agents of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and not released back on the streets of Suffolk County.

Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco has successfully implemented a plan, with the cooperation of New York State Commission of Correction, which will save the County an estimated $5.23 million dollars. The plan centers on the approval of 152 additional variance beds for the Riverhead Correctional Facility. Sheriff DeMarco emphasized that it was the cooperation of Chairman Daniel L. Stewart of the Commission of Correction that enabled his plan to move forward. Without his plan, Suffolk County would be forced to continue to spend millions of dollars sending inmates to substitute jails throughout the State as a result of overcrowding.

Allison Waluk decided to bring a gift to her boyfriend, Alfonso Santiago and was immediately arrested. The problem became apparent in that the gift was five packages of heroin, and the recipient was already an inmate at the Yaphank Correctional Facility.

A former inmate, Brian Cole, age 30, of East Islip, New York, is once again behind bars after mailing heroin from multiple post offices to inmates at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility. He is charged with Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance and Promoting Prison Contraband.

Deputy Sheriff Investigators from the Sheriff’s Office Warrant Squad conducted a warrant sweep of support delinquents during the first half of May to coincide with Mother’s Day celebrations. The sweep area covered Nassau, Suffolk, and New York City. In the end twenty-six warrants were executed.

On March 21, 2007 at approximately 9:00 p.m., Deputy Sheriff Robert Reeve, a five-year veteran of the S.C. Sheriff’s Office, with over 100 arrests, was utilizing the new license plate reader, commonly known as LPR, when he received a signal alert. The LPR advised the Deputy that a vehicle with a suspended registration had just passed by the unit. Deputy Reeve was able to stop the 2001 Chevy northbound on Route 24, across from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, and approach the operator. Deputy Sheriff Reeve asked the operator for her driver’s license and registration when Ms. Taddeo, age 38, of Port Jefferson Station, stated that, “ she did not have a New York license but had a Florida permit over 20 years ago.” Ms. Taddeo then wrote down her alleged name and date of birth and handed it to the Deputy Sheriff. A computer check revealed that the woman had no license in New York under the given name of Marie Taddeo.

Yesterday at approximately 1:00 p.m. at the Riverhead 7-11 on Old Country Road, Deputy Sheriffs Howard and Patterson observed a 1997 green Chevy parked with the engine running, windows closed, and a woman slumped over the wheel. As the Deputy Sheriffs approached the vehicle they noticed that a 5-week-old baby had been placed unsecured in a car seat in the rear of the vehicle. The Deputies attempted to wake the operator of the vehicle, Rabia DiMarcantonio, age 33, of Riverhead, by banging on the car windows. Ms. DiMarcantonio, who had been sound asleep, woke up and opened the window. Ms. DiMarcantonio stated that she had taken methadone, which caused her to fall asleep, and that it happened once before.

On March 20, 2007 at approximately 6:00 p.m., Deputy Sheriff Etheridge, operating a marked Sheriff’s unit westbound on the LIE near Exit 63, noticed a 2006 Hyundai speeding and operating in an erratic manner, in and out of traffic. Deputy Etheridge was able to stop the vehicle on the shoulder of the expressway and ask the operator for his driver’s license and registration. Mr. Harold Walker, age 41 of Holtsville, New York, surprised Deputy Etheridge by stating, “Could you give me a break on my suspensions because I’m on my way to get a massage in Queens”.

Yesterday at approximately 3:30 p.m., Calvin McDonald, age 26, of Bellport, New York, and his passenger, Donnitta Coffey, age 21, of East Patchogue, New York, checked in with the security booth at the S.C. Correctional Facility in Yaphank to visit an inmate. Mr. McDonald was asked to produce his driver’s license and he responded by giving the Deputy an I.D. card. When the Deputy asked him where his driver’s license was, Mr. McDonald replied, “I have no license – it’s suspended.” D/S McAllister responded, “It’s suspended?”, to which Mr. McDonald replied, “Yeah, a lot.”

The first weekend of Campaign Safe and Sober resulted in two D.W.I. arrests by the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office. Campaign Safe and Sober is a nationwide movement, which runs from August 18th through Labor Day, in an effort to remove drunk drivers from our roadways.
