Raise awareness of the growing epidemic of obesity nationally and also locally, discussing the causes of obesity on a health policy level and its effects on society, especially as a risk factor for the development of Type II Diabetes and other diseases;
Increase recognition of obesity as a health concern that disproportionately affects women and children of minority groups – especially African-Americans and Latinos;
Highlight the problem of childhood obesity in Suffolk County with any available data;
Provide community leaders and residents with practical methods on how to address overweight and obesity in their own lives as well as in their communities.
