YAPHANK, NY-- To coincide with National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, the Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA) and the Town of Brookhaven have teamed up to offer memory screenings for the general public at a Brookhaven Town Health Fair on November 30, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Rose Caracappa Senior Citizens Cultural and Wellness Center in Mt. Sinai.

A memory screening lasts just 10 minutes and consists of a series of questions and tasks designed to gauge thinking and language skills. Screenings are administered by qualified healthcare professionals. While it is not a diagnostic tool, a screening can signal whether someone should follow up with a physician for a full evaluation.

In addition to the memory screenings, officials from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office will be available to answer questions about Project Lifesaver, which is a countywide emergency response locator service capable of finding individuals diagnosed with cognitive impairments in the event they wander and become lost.

The Rose Caracappa Senior Citizens Cultural and Wellness Center is located at the intersection of Route 25A and County Road 83 in Mt. Sinai. For more information about the Health Fair, call the Brookhaven Town Senior Citizen Division at 631-451-9191. Information about Project Lifesaver is available here, or the public may call the Sheriff’s Office’s Project Lifesaver Bureau at (631) 852-3003. For more information about the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, call toll-free 866-232-8484, or visit
