Heat Advisory

In preparation for this weekend’s extreme heat, the Suffolk County emergency management team and Countydepartments are making necessary preparations.

The Suffolk County Parks Department is extending lifeguard hours at all County beaches until 7:00 PM from Friday through Sunday. The Suffolk County library system will be used as cooling locations.

Our Suffolk County Community College Selden, Brentwood and Riverhead campuses will have cooling centers open to the public between the hours of 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Sunday.  In Selden, head to the Babylon Student Center Cafeteria on the Ammerman Campus. In Brentwood, head to the Captree Building Cafeteria on the Michael J Grant Campus. In Riverhead, head to the Peconic Building Cafeteria on the Eastern Campus.

In addition, a number of local towns will be opening cooling centers and extending beach and pool hours. Residents are advised to call their local town or village for more information on local centers and extended hours.

Governor Cuomo has directed the State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation to offer extended hours at state swimming facilities during the heat wave. The extended hours will begin Friday and continue through Sunday at the following State Parks

  • Jones Beach
  • Sunken Meadow
  • Robert Moses
  • Orient Beach
  • Hecksher
  • Wildwood
  • Hither Hills
  • Montauk Downs

The New York State Department of Health has also created an online list of cooling centers where people can cool down on days of extreme temperatures. A list of addresses and phone numbers for cooling centers shared by local health departments and emergency management offices in each region is available here.

  • Run major appliances such as washers, dryers, dishwashers, and pool pumps in the morning or late evening to avoid peak demand hours of 2 to 8 p.m.
  • Put air conditioners on timers and don't let them run when not at home.
  • Set air conditioners at 78 degrees or higher if health allows
  • Use fans to circulate cool air, which helps cut air conditioner use
  • Make sure you have replaced filters and that A/C coils are clean
  • Set refrigerators and freezers at most efficient temperatures
