More Mosquito Samples Test Positive for West Nile Virus

Suffolk County Health Commissioner James L. Tomarken, MD, MPH, MBA, MSW, announced today that 28 more mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus. The samples, all Culex pipiens-restuans, were collected between September 3rd and September 5th.  On September 3rd, from Bay Shore (4).  On September 4th,  from West Babylon (4), Lindenhurst (2),  Huntington Station (2), Northport (1), Dix Hills (1), Deer Park (1), Copiague (3), Holbrook (1), Patchogue (1),North Babylon (3), and East Northport (2). On September 5th, Selden (1), East Setauket (1) and Shelter Island (1).

September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

Ovarian cancer is sometimes called the silent killer because it is difficult to detect in its early stages. There is no simple way to screen for it. 

Upcoming Falls- Prevention Workshops

James Tomarken, Commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, announced today that the Department of Health Services will hold its falls prevention workshops for senior residents in the communities of East Islip, East Northport, Melville, Sayville, and Bellport. 

Cyanobacteria Blooms Occurring in Sagg Pond, Sagaponack, Lake Capri in West Islip, and Old Town Pond, Southampton

State and Local government officials have confirmed the presence of a cyanobacteria bloom in Sagg Pond, Sagaponack, Lake Capri in West Islip, and Old Town Pond, Southampton. 

Seventeen More Mosquito Samples Test Positive for West Nile Virus

     Heckscher State Park advised to limit activities to daytime hours

Suffolk County Health Commissioner James L. Tomarken, MD, MPH, MBA, MSW, announced today that 17 more mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus. The samples, all Culex pipiens-restuans, were collected between August 25th and August 29th from Heckscher State Park in Islip (1), Blydenburgh Park in Smithtown (1), and Gardiner Park in West Bay Shore (1),  as well as from  Huntington (1), Northport (1), Dix Hills (2), West Islip (2), North Babylon (1), Copiague (2) Brentwood (1), Bay Shore (2), Holbrook (1) and Rocky Point (1).
