Health News

Mosquito Spraying

Weather permitting, the Suffolk County Department of Public Works will treat sections of the following communities as part of its ongoing annual effort to control the mosquito population.

Tides Beach Open for Bathing

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services today lifted the bathing closure it had issued for Tides Beach in Rocky Point. Results of recent samples collected at Tides Beach show the water quality to be within acceptable levels.

Two Programs Focused on Falls Prevention Scheduled for July

County Executive Steve Bellone and Commissioner of Health Services James Tomarken invite mature residents to attend workshops focused on falls prevention The programs are intended to empower mature adults to carry out behaviors that reduce the risks of falls and improve their quality of life. The first workshop, a CDC model program entitled ‘Stepping On,’ is a seven-week course that focuses on  improving balance and strength, home and community safety, vision, safe footwear and medication review. The program has proven to reduce the number of falls for participants by 31 percent. The second workshop entitled Staying Independent for Life covers much of the information that is provided in the ‘Stepping On’ program in a condensed two-hour session.

Two Beaches Closed to Bathing

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services has closed the following beaches to bathing due to the finding of bacterial levels in excess of acceptable criteria.
