In Suffolk County, administration of the Civil Service Law is carried out under the direction of the Suffolk County Personnel Director. The Suffolk County Department of Civil Service is responsible for overseeing personnel actions taken by some 241 employing jurisdictions including school districts, towns, villages water districts, library districts, etc. Collectively, these jurisdictions employ some 40,000 individuals.

The majority of all jobs fall within the competitive class, which is characterized by examinations used to ascertain the relative merit and fitness of candidates. Announcements for current examinations are available on this site by clicking on Current List of Exams. Examination announcements are also posted in the Hauppauge Office of the Suffolk County Department of Civil Service and at our Riverhead Office located in the Riverhead County Center.

The Suffolk County Police Department has a vacancy for a Courier located in the Communications and Records Bureau located at Police Headquarters in Yaphank, NY. 

Starting salary is $32,018 and the work schedule is Monday through Friday, 37.5 hours a week, rotating one week 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. and one week 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

All applicants should possess a good knowledge of the following typical work activities:

• May process mail through the central county mailroom servicing a majority of county departments.
• May pick up and deliver large amounts of mail to several county departments; answers routine questions related to mail processing.

The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office is seeking an 

Evidence Control Clerk II
An employee in this title is responsible for the receipt, classification, storage and release of critical and confidential items of evidence related to cases under the jurisdiction of the Medical Examiner's Office, the District Attorney's Office or the Suffolk County Police Department. Testimony is given in court when necessary. Supervision may be exercised over personnel engaged in the record keeping and maintenance of evidence. Work is reviewed by an administrative supervisor.  
Minimum Requirements:  
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four (4) years of experience in inventory control and stock-keeping, two (2) of which must have been in handling material evidence from criminal cases.

SUFFOLK COUNTY AGRONOMIST

Suffolk County is seeking an agricultural specialist for the title of Agronomist in the Soil and Water Conservation District.  An employee in this title performs technical work and studies for the Suffolk County Soil and Water Conservation District in order to ensure the long-term viability of the area’s prime agricultural soils.  The incumbent develops and certifies integrated pest management plans and nutrient management plans for Suffolk County agricultural producers.  Work involves coordination between agencies.  The incumbent will provide training to District staff on the preparation of nutrient management plans for implementation at farms throughout Suffolk County.   PLEASE SEE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS BELOW

Either:

Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office is seeking:
Chief Detective Investigator

The Chief Detective Investigator is responsible for directing and coordinating the activities of the investigative staff for the District Attorney's Office.  The duties involve developing operating procedures for investigative methods and supervising the activities of investigators engaged in investigations.  The incumbent directs the training of investigative personnel.  Supervision is received from the District Attorney or the Chief Assistant District Attorney through conferences. 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Ten years of diverse investigation experience in a local law enforcement agency and five additional years of experience working as a federal law enforcement investigator.” The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of working collaboratively with state and local law enforcement, past supervisory experience, and specialized expertise in investigations into drug operations, anti-terrorism and public corruption offenses. The successful candidate will be responsible for directing and coordinating the activities of the investigative staff for the District Attorney's Office.  The duties involve developing operating procedures for investigative methods and supervising the activities of investigators engaged in investigations. 

The Deputy Chief Detective Investigator assists in the supervision of continuing investigations and otherwise coordinates activities of the District Attorney's investigative staff.  Responsibility is included for directing and conducting particularly sensitive investigations and for conducting internal investigations as required. The work is performed under the general direction of the Chief Detective Investigator or District Attorney and is reviewed through conferences and submission of required reports
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma recognized by the New York State Department of Education and an aggregate minimum of eight (8) years of experience as a detective or plainclothes investigator while employed as a police officer by a state, county, city, town or village police department within New York State.  At least four years of this experience must have been in a supervisory capacity with responsibility for the investigation of syndicated, organized criminal activity in more than one of the following:  arson; homicide; larceny by extortion; gambling; narcotics; prostitution; usury.
 
The Division Chief position requires an individual with unimpeachable integrity and significant prosecution  and managerial experience to serve as a Division Chief overseeing the newly created Special Affairs Division.  

Inclusive of this position, there are three Divisions -- the Trial Division, Investigations Division, and the Special Affairs Division -- each of which is overseen by a Division Chief.  The Division Chiefs report to the Chief Assistant who in turn reports to the District Attorney, all of whom comprise the Executive Office, along with the Chief of Staff and Chief Investigator. 

The Special Affairs Division Chief will oversee the newly created Conviction Integrity Bureau, the Public Integrity Bureau, and the Appeals and Training Bureau.  Each Bureau is overseen by a Bureau Chief who will report to the Division Chief. 

Candidates must possess a New York State License to practice law before the Bar of the State of New York.

            Park Attendants are hired to perform a variety of tasks including maintenance, office work, as well as registrations and fee collections at the entrance booths. Park Attendants must be at least 16 years of age, and willing to work weekends and holidays, early and evening shifts. Substitute School Crossing Guard

The Suffolk County Police Department is seeking candidates for the position of substitute School Crossing Guard. Substitute School Crossing Guards work on an on-call basis. The hourly rate of pay as of 07/01/16 is $13.27. There is a guarantee of 3.0 hours for every assignment. No other benefits are available. Typical work activities include regulating the directional flow of school children, pedestrian and vehicular traffic at an assigned intersection or school crosswalk; reporting traffic incidents to police authorities for appropriate action ; noting unusual or suspicious occurrences or actions of individuals and alerting police in cases of observed or suspected violations of law and ordinances. Candidates must be able to read and write English. At the time of appointment, and during employment, employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State. Prior to appointment, there will be qualifying psychological and medical evaluations as well as an in-depth background investigation. The Suffolk County Police Department is seeking full time Detention Attendants

Detention Attendants duties include: searching prisoners for weapons, contraband, drugs and other harmful articles; guarding persons detained at a police station house or detention facility pending hearing or transfer to a penal institution. Caring for prisoners who are sick or Intoxicated; accompanying prisoners to court; observing inmates in cells to assure prisoners' well being and adherence to regulations and rules.

Responsible for the cleanliness and sanitation of the dormitory and cells of detention facilities and clerical tasks such as maintaining detention log, sorting documents, data entry, filing, opening and distributing station mail and answering phones and relaying messages.

All candidates must undergo qualifying psychological & medical evaluations as well as an extensive background investigation before being hired. Detention Attendants must obtain a CDL license at their own expense after they are hired.

The annual salary is $31,050.00. Employees are required to join the New York State Retirement System. The current applicable contribution rate is 3% of the gross salary. Employees may also enroll in health insurance coverage. The annual cost for an individual plan is $1,418.53 while the annual cost for a family plan is $3,025.51.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK:

A Chief Attorney serves in a confidential capacity and is responsible for supervising the staff of a Mental Hygiene legal Service office or an attorney disciplinary committee A Chief Attorney is responsible for monitoring the progress of cases and resolving problems, developing and implementing policies and procedures, and administering all related activities. A Chief Attorney also researches legal issues and questions, presents complex cases before administrative tribunals and trial and appellate courts, organizes complex investigations, and performs other related duties.

ASSIGNMENT:
Counsel to the Grievance Committees in the Second Department serves as legal counsel to those Committees. The duties of the Chief Counsel to the Grievance Committee for the Tenth Judicial District are as follows: supervise a staff of approximately thirteen attorneys, as well as support staff, in the investigation and, if appropriate, prosecution of complaints of alleged attorney misconduct, on behalf of that Committee.  Review and analyze grievance complaints to determine if an investigation is warranted.  Assist and counsel staff attorneys on legal issues, areas of inquiry, investigative strategies and potential dispositions, including discipline by consent.  Review and edit confidential legal memoranda, pleadings, motions, disposition letters and other documents prepared by staff attorneys for submission to the Grievance Committee, the Court, and the Special Referees appointed to hear disciplinary proceedings.  Perform legal research pertaining to ethics and attorney responsibility.  Conduct and supervise hearings before Special Referees appointed by the Appellate Division.  Act as liaison between the Grievance Committee and the Nassau and Suffolk County Bar Associations and their grievance, mediation and fee conciliation committees, as well as the Fee Dispute Program of Part 137 of the Rules of the Chief Administrator of the Courts.  Oversee the management of the agency, which includes but is not limited to personnel, fiscal and facility issues.   Assist Appellate Division with agency's annual budget and future propagation of its mission.  Responsible for preparation of quarterly and annual statistics, as well as the completion of surveys, for various bar associations and the Lawyers' Fund for Client Protection, among other entities.  Collaborate with Chief Counsel of the other Grievance Committees within the Second Department, as well as the Appellate Division, Second Department's Clerk of the Court and Chief of Staff.
