The Suffolk County Sheriff's office employs 841 correction officers, 247 deputy sheriffs and 130 civilian personnel.


Suffolk County has a population of over 1.5 million and, and our entire staff works tirelessly to serve and protect our residents through innovative programs to reduce inmate recidivism, by promoting sound fiscal policies and by working cooperatively with law enforcement and community groups throughout the county to improve safety in our jails and our neighborhoods.

November 19, 2009 - Fighting Drug Use on Long Island: Sheriff DeMarco Announces Free Drug Test Kit Program and Awareness Initiatives
On Thursday, November 19th Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco will unveil the new “Test, Don’t Guess” Drug Test Kit Program- an awareness program aimed at empowering parents to engage in active intervention if they suspect their children of having a drug problem.
November 18, 2009 - Tragedy Averted: D.W.I. Minivan Wrong Way on Sunrise
At approximately 5:00 a.m. today, Deputy Sheriff Vincent Aparicio arrested Manuel Mendez, d.o.b. 5/31/74, of Hackensack, New Jersey, following a 911 call reporting a minivan traveling at a high rate of speed westbound in the eastbound lanes of Sunrise Highway, preventing a tragic outcome.
October 29, 2009 - Sheriff DeMarco Supports Proposed Amendment to New York State Constitution
The New York State Constitution has for many years prohibited a sentenced inmate from working, where his or her work is “contracted, given or sold” to anyone. While this provision does not prevent inmates from working for the State or any municipality, most thought inmates who volunteered to be on supervised work crews could be sent to not-for-profit agencies also, since these activities were considered part of the inmate’s rehabilitation program, and not any form of required or compensated labor. However, a few years ago, the State Commission of Correction –which is the State agency that oversees all correctional facilities in New York State- questioned the practice of allowing inmates to work at not-for-profit agencies, and suggested that the Constitution be clarified.

Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco hosted his Third Annual Gang Seminar on Thursday, October 22nd in Smithtown. The seminar, which was attended by hundreds of law enforcement professionals and community activists, highlighted the latest trends in gang intelligence.
October 05, 2009 - Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco Announces $2.5 Million Award from the U.S. Department of Justice
Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco announced today that the U.S. Department of Justice has awarded Suffolk County $2,559,573 for participation in the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP) for the year 2008. The Sheriff’s Office has participated in this program since 1997 and has received approximately $15 million to date.
