(SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y.) – Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney today announced that Tremayne Winfield, 39, of Amityville, was sentenced to 17 years to life in prison after a jury found him guilty of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, and related charges, for possessing a loaded handgun.
“The sentence handed down to this defendant reflects the gravity of his offenses and our commitment to removing dangerous individuals from our streets,” said District Attorney Tierney. “We believe this outcome will deter others and contribute to the safety of our neighborhoods in Suffolk County.”
The evidence at trial established that on April 28, 2023, members of the Suffolk County Police Department executed a search warrant at a residence in Bay Shore. Upon entry, officers found Winfield inside the home with a loaded 9 mm handgun with an extended magazine containing multiple rounds of ammunition.
On June 21, 2024, Winfield was found guilty after a jury trial heard before Supreme Court Justice John B. Collins of one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a Class C felony, and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree, Class D felonies.
Winfield was previously convicted of multiple felony offenses in Suffolk County including Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a Class C violent felony, Assault in the Second Degree, a Class D violent felony, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree, a Class D felony, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree, a Class A misdemeanor.
On November 15, 2024, Justice Collins sentenced Winfield to 17 years to life in prison. He was represented by Eric Besso, Esq.
This case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Jennifer Wickers and Daniel Fischer of the Narcotics Bureau, and the investigation was conducted by Detectives Thomas Sullivan and Michael Cammarata of the Suffolk County Police Department’s Third Squad.
