NORTH BABYLON MAN INDICTED FOR ATTEMPTING TO ROB A WOMAN HE HIRED TO CLEAN HIS APARTMENT

(SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y.) – Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney today announced that Christopher Doran, 66, of North Babylon, was indicted for Attempted Robbery in the First Degree, and related charges, after he allegedly tried to rob a woman that he commissioned for home cleaning services.

“The allegations in this case represent a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior,” said District Attorney Tierney. “This defendant allegedly lured the unsuspecting victim to his home under false pretenses and then attempted to steal from her at knifepoint.”

According to the investigation, on September 2, 2024, Doran allegedly lured the victim to his apartment on Weeks Road in North Babylon, under the prospects of hiring the victim to clean his home. When the victim arrived, Doran told her he needed her to drive him in her car to the bank to retrieve cash for the services. After he instructed the victim to drive him to several locations between Bay Shore and Babylon, Doran told the victim to pull into a Chase Bank parking lot. Once the car was parked, Doran allegedly pulled a knife out and demanded money from the victim.

Doran then grabbed the victim as she attempted to flee the car. Once the victim was able to break free, she immediately shut the driver’s side door and locked her vehicle with Doran in it.

Unable to open the doors to exit, Doran then allegedly smashed his way out of the vehicle’s window with a hammer and fled. On September 3, 2024, Suffolk County Police officers located Doran and took him into custody.

On September 25, 2024, Doran was arraigned on the indictment before Acting Supreme Court Justice Karen M. Wilutis, for Attempted Robbery in the First degree, a Class C felony; Robbery in the Third Degree, a Class D felony; and Criminal Mischief in the Fourth Degree, a Class A misdemeanor.

Justice Ambro ordered Doran held on $100,000 cash, $200,000 bond or $1,000,000 partially secured bond during the pendency of the case. Doran is due back in court on October 17, 2024, and faces 16 years to life in prison if convicted on the top count. He is being represented by the Legal Aid Society.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Scott Romano of the Major Crime Bureau, and the investigation was conducted by Detective John Caraccia of the Suffolk County Police Department.
