(SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y.) – Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney today announced that Anthony Alexander, 57, of Deer Park, was found guilty by a jury on charges that he sold pills containing fentanyl under the guise that they were oxycodone to an undercover police officer.
“This defendant showed an absolute disregard for public safety by brazenly using the Babylon Train Station as his marketplace to sell highly addictive and dangerous opioids, as found by the jury. These pills were particularly dangerous because the defendant was selling them without disclosing that they contained fentanyl,” said District Attorney Tierney. “Thanks to our Heroin Task Force, this dangerous drug purveyor’s illegal entrepreneurship venture was shut down and now he’s going to prison.”
The evidence at trial established that in January 2022, during the investigation into Alexander’s narcotic dealings, an investigator assigned to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office Heroin Task Force contacted the defendant and arranged to purchase a quantity of oxycodone pills. Alexander sold the undercover investigator pills that purported to be oxycodone on January 13, 2022, and January 18, 2022. Both sales occurred at the Babylon train station. Subsequent testing revealed the pills Alexander sold to the investigator were fentanyl, not oxycodone.
On January 20, 2022, Alexander was arrested at the Babylon train station. At the time of his arrest, Alexander was found with metal knuckles and a quantity of pills including oxycodone, alprazolam, and suboxone films.
On March 30, 2023, Alexander was convicted after a jury trial heard before County Court Judge, the Honorable Steven A. Pilewski, for three counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree, a Class B felony; two counts of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree, a Class B felony; and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Fifth Degree, a Class D felony.
Upon the jury’s verdict, Alexander was remanded by Judge Pilewski. Alexander is due back in court on May 3, 2023 for sentencing, and faces 30 years in prison. He is represented by Chris Cassar, Esq.
The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Heroin Task Force is comprised of investigators from the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, and the Suffolk County Police Department.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Robert Archer of the Narcotics Bureau.
