(SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y.) – Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney today announced the indictment of Jason Funderburke, 37, of Hempstead, accused of Robbery in the First Degree and related charges for his involvement in the robbery and stabbing of the owner of an Amityville funeral home during a robbery.
“This local business owner who was allegedly targeted by the defendant and an unapprehended accomplice,” said District Attorney Tierney. “The victim was not only targeted and stabbed, but his family was also allegedly targeted and threatened. I urge anyone with information as to the accomplice to contact Crime Stoppers, the Suffolk County Police Department, or my office.”
According to the investigation, on August 29, 2023, Funderburke and an unapprehended accomplice allegedly approached the owner as he returned to the funeral home. Funderburke displayed a photo of the victim’s family and threatened them. Next, Funderburke and his accomplice began punching the defendant and during the assault, the accomplice stabbed the victim twice. During the incident, Funderburke and his accomplice allegedly demanded money and stole property from the victim.
Funderburke is charged with Robbery in the First Degree, a Class B violent felony, two counts of Robbery in the Second Degree, Class C violent felonies, and Assault in the Second Degree, a Class D violent felony.
On December 18, 2023, at his arraignment on the indictment, Supreme Court Justice, the Honorable Timothy Mazzei ordered Funderburke held on $100,000 cash, $200,000 bond or $1 million partially secured bond. Funderburke is being represented by John Halverson, Esq. His next court date is January 24, 2024.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Carlos J. Benitez II of the Major Crime Bureau investigative assistance from the Suffolk County Police Department’s First Precinct.
