(SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y.) – Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney today announced that a 38 year-old Brentwood man has been sentenced to 20 years to life in prison for a string of burglaries and attempted burglaries of residences in his own neighborhood.
“This defendant invaded the sanctity of his victims’ homes and victimized two women even further by returning to their residences after they had previously thwarted his initial burglary attempts,” said Tierney. “This sentence ensures that he will no longer prey on his victims or victimize others. I am committed to making sure that the residents of Suffolk County feel safe in their own homes and that swift justice is handed down to those who violate the law.”
The trial evidence showed that on August 30, 2020, at approximately 5:00 a.m., a female resident of a home located on Monroe Avenue in Brentwood, reported that she awoke to find Kevin Garrison standing over her bed with his shorts undone. Garrison immediately ran out of the house when he realized his victim was awake. Later on that same morning, on Brentwood Parkway in Brentwood, another female resident walked into her bedroom while brushing her teeth and caught Garrison climbing through the bedroom window. The victim screamed and Garrison fled.
On September 18, 2020 at approximately 3 a.m., Garrison went to a residence on Oak Street in Brentwood and committed a third burglary by moving the accordion sleeve of an air conditioner aside and reaching into the bedroom window to steal a purse while the victim slept in bed with her granddaughter. At approximately 4:45 a.m., he returned to the same residence on Monroe Avenue in Brentwood that he had previously burglarized. However, by this time, the family had a stick placed in the window, which prevented the defendant from gaining entry and because they had installed a surveillance camera as a result of his previous entry in the home, he was captured on film attempting to burglarize the house.
A short while later, at about 5:40 a.m., Garrison went to a residence on Adams Avenue in Brentwood. While a female victim slept in the room, the defendant committed a fourth burglary by moving the sleeve to the air conditioning unit aside. He reached into the room and took trophies from the dresser below the window.
Finally, Garrison ended his spree that morning at approximately 5:45 a.m., when he returned to the same Brentwood Parkway residence in Brentwood that he had also previously burglarized, and walked up the driveway. The defendant walked around the house, looked into windows, but could not find an easy point of entry. He then left on his bicycle. This entire incident was caught on surveillance video.
Garrsion was arrested that same day. He was convicted after trial and found guilty on Dec. 14, 2021. Suffolk County Court Judge Timothy Mazzei sentenced him to 20 years to life on four counts of Burglary in the Second Degree, 16 years to life on the Attempted Burglary in the Second Degree, and 30 days on the Criminal Trespass in the Third Degree. All sentences to run concurrent to one another. The judge issued permanent orders of protection for all civilian witnesses.
Senior ADA Rose Romeo and Assistant District Attorney Dena Rizopoulos of the Felony Offense Bureau, Major Crime Unit, prosecuted the case.
