(SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y.) – Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney today announced the sentencing of a Brentwood man to 22 years in prison plus five years of post-release supervision for fatally stabbing his mother in 2019.
“This defendant callously took the life of the very person who gave him life and destroyed his own family in the process,” said Tierney. “With this sentence, this defendant has been brought to justice and hopefully the family and surrounding community can feel some closure over this senseless crime.”
The prosecutor’s evidence showed that on December 8, 2019 at about 6:00 a.m., Akcel Arriaza, 22, lured his mother, Dora Villatoro Arriaza outside the home on Adams Avenue in Brentwood, to her car where he ambushed her. Arriaza, who was 19 years-old at the time, then repeatedly stabbed his mother on the head and body. Villatoro Arriaza, 46, was in the process of a divorce and the family continued to live in the same house, with escalating tension.
Arriaza pled guilty to First Degree Manslaughter on November 23, 2021 and agreed to a sentence of 22 years in prison plus five years of post-release supervision. He was sentenced yesterday before Suffolk County Supreme Court Justice Richard I. Horowitz.
Principal Assistant District Attorney Francis Schroeder of the Felony Offense Bureau, Violent Crime Unit prosecuted this case.
