(SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y.) – Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney today announced the sentencing of Neiman Ramjattan to three years in prison and three years post release supervision after a jury convicted him of Reckless Assault of a Child and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
“This defendant recklessly used brute force on a defenseless infant because he could not control himself,” said Tierney. “The child could not defend himself from his own father’s abuse but the jury spoke for him and now justice is served.”
According to evidence produced at trial, Ramjattan, 35, recklessly shook his four week-old infant son at his Bellport home in early August 2020, causing the infant to sustain a brain bleed, retinal hemorrhaging, and fractures to his left and right legs that required the child to be hospitalized at Stony Brook Hospital.
Ramjattan, made oral admissions to shaking the baby stating, “I’m the jerk that did this to my baby. He was fussy so I picked him up from the crib. I picked him up forcefully and shook him, I wasn’t looking at his legs that must have been when they broke. I’m a monster. I hurt my child.” Ramjattan, a Cardiologist at Northwell Health in Bay Shore at the time, was arrested on August 24, 2020 after Child Protective Services (CPS) was contacted.
A jury found Ramjattan guilty of one count of Reckless Assault of a Child, a D Felony and one count of Endangering the Welfare of a Child on October 7, 2021. He was sentenced today before Suffolk County Court Justice Timothy Mazzei.
Senior Assistant District Attorney Melissa Grier of the Child Abuse and Domestic Violence Bureau prosecuted the case.
