(SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y.) – Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney today announced the guilty plea to murder committed by Paul Bonny who shot and killed his wife in 2020 then turned the gun on himself in front of the couple’s two young children.
“Domestic violence cases are especially traumatizing to the children having to witness them. This defendant not only killed his wife in front of their two young daughters, but he further traumatized them by pulling the trigger on himself in a cowardly attempt to escape justice,” said Tierney. “Now he has left two young girls without parents and he’s going to spend an extensive amount of time in prison paying for what he’s done.”
Bonny, 35, plead guilty to Murder in the Second Degree before the Hon. Justice John Collins. Bonny admitted to the court that on Nov. 9, 2020 at approximately 8:51 p.m., he shot his wife with the intent to kill her. The investigation revealed that Bonny and his wife Cathiana Bonny were arguing in the driveway of their Deer Park residence when he fatally shot her. Their two daughters then aged 12 and 6 remained inside a vehicle in the driveway when Bonny pulled out a handgun and fired approximately three shots striking his wife in the head and the torso before turning the gun on himself. Cathiana Bonny was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Bonny recovered and was charged with Murder on Nov. 22.
He faces 21 years to life in prison and is due back in court for sentencing on May 24.
This case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Francis X. Schroeder of the Homicide Bureau.
