(SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y.) – Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney today announced that a jury returned a guilty verdict against Almalik Keller for Assault in the First Degree, for brutally assaulting his wife.
“This defendant’s sustained and remorseless assault of the victim was unconscionable and unacceptable,” said Tierney. “Domestic violence cannot be tolerated. I commend everyone in law enforcement who worked tirelessly to protect both the victim and the community from further violence by this defendant.”
The evidence at trial established that on September 17, 2021, Keller brutally assaulted his wife at a smoke shop. The entire incident was captured on video, which showed Keller brutally punching, kicking and stomping the victim, and throwing glass bottles and cans at her head. Bystanders at the store assisted the victim into the rear driver’s side of her vehicle. Keller, who was in the driver’s seat, got out and slammed the door on the leg of the victim before driving away with the victim in the car. The victim suffered a black eye and two lacerations to her scalp that required stitches. In addition, the victim sustained a broken leg and had to undergo two surgeries to install two permanent steel plates on both sides of her left leg.
Keller was arrested that same night by the Suffolk County Police Department. Upon approaching the vehicle, they saw the victim in the back seat covered in blood and screaming. When they attempted to arrest him for assault, Keller fought with one of the officers before managing to escape on foot. Eventually, officers caught Keller and subdued him with a taser.
Keller was convicted by the jury of Assault in the First Degree; Assault in the Second Degree; Aggravated Criminal Contempt and Resisting Arrest. Upon sentencing, he faces a potential sentence of 25 years in prison.
The trial was heard before the Honorable Timothy P. Mazzei, Suffolk Superior Court. Keller is represented by Christopher Brocato, Esq. He is due back in court for sentencing on August 22, 2022.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys, MacDonald Drane and Zachary Kelly of the Child Abuse and Domestic Violence Bureau.
