Cathedral Pines Construction

The Suffolk County Parks Department is pleased to announce that construction to update and further electrify Cathedral Pines Campground in Middle Island will be beginning in Fall 2023. The County is implementing initial phases of the Cathedral Pines Master Plan with Phase I concentrating on the redevelopment of the campsites at Field B of the property.

The improvements will consist of a reconfiguration of the campsite road network and layout, electrification, with new asphalt camping pads, power pedestals, fire rings, and barbecues along with safety improvements (one-way driving lanes) and tree plantings. Additional improvements, intended as future phases planned in upcoming years, include new restroom/shower facilities, recreational amenities, pavilion spaces, and a new check-in station.

During construction, the park and campgrounds will be closed to the public, including Fields A, B, C, D. Construction is scheduled to start after Labor Day, and barring any unforeseen weather-related delays, the Field B improvements are expected to be completed by Memorial Day Weekend, May 2024.

Cathedral Pines Park and Campgrounds will close to the public after Labor Day weekend and reservations will not extend past Tuesday, September 5, 2023. Traditionally, the Parks Department has allowed overwinter camping at Cathedral Pines and Indian Island County Parks. Due to the closure, it has been decided that off-season camping will be moved to Southaven County Park and continue at Indian Island County Park for the 2023/2024 winter season. Once construction has been completed and Cathedral Pines has been cleared to re-open, the Parks Department will notify the public with plans on when the reservation system will open for Spring/Summer 2024 reservations.
