Suffolk County Parks starts recruiting for ocean and stillwater lifeguards in January each year and hires for three of its beaches each summer: Smith Point, Cupsogue and Meschutt.
To qualify to be a lifeguard you must:
- Attend a minimum of four (4) training sessions which are typically held in March-May each year.
- Be at least 15 years of age as of March 1 of that year.
- Be prepared to run 3 miles, swim 2 x 50yrds and 2 x 300yrds for time.
24-hour qualification course sessions take place on Sundays from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Suffolk County Community College Riverhead Campus Pool.
JANUARY OCEAN LIFEGUARD PRE-CERTIFICATION COURSE
New for 2025, Suffolk County Parks will be offering a January Ocean Lifeguard pre-certification course for youth and adults interested in becoming a Suffolk County lifeguard.
The course will take place during winter break:
Candidates are required to attend at minimum of four (4) of the eight (8) qualification sessions. You must have the following qualifications:
- 16 years or older as of June 22, 2025
- Athletic skills and/or previous swimming experience
- Qualify for time in both swimming and running
Successful candidates will be eligible for Ocean Lifeguard Certification that is held in May/June 2025 to lifeguard at Smith Point and Cupsogue beaches.
