ENDANGERED SPECIES PROGRAM

Suffolk County Department of Parks is currently accepting resumes for seasonal openings in its Endangered Species Protection Program for the UPCOMING season. The positions involve helping to manage nesting shorebirds (piping plovers and least terns) at seventeen sites throughout Suffolk County. Candidates will gain an intimate knowledge of bird behavior and of the unique management issues their presence creates.

Qualifying Candidates must:

• Have coursework or experience in ornithology, ecology, and natural resources
• Be able to meet the physical demands of the job such as walking miles on the beach, carrying heavy fencing materials, digging trenches, and installing fencing and barricades in summer weather conditions.
• Be meticulous and concise in recording data.
• Have an ability to interact professionally with the general public and co-workers
• Demonstrate an ability to work effectively with others and independently under stressful conditions
• Work weekends & holidays, and flexible hours (average 35 hours/week)
• Have a valid driver’s license (often required to drive 2-3 hours a day to visit sites) (Use of your personal vehicle may be required in limited circumstances)

Seasonal Endangered Species Program Announcement Release

LIFEGUARD FOR THE 2025 SEASON

Suffolk County Parks starts recruiting for ocean and stillwater lifeguards in January each year and hires for three of its beaches each summer: Smith Point, Cupsogue and Meschutt.

To qualify to be a lifeguard you must:

• Attend a minimum of four (4) training sessions which are typically held in March-May each year.
• Be at least 15 years of age as of March 1 of that year.
• Be prepared to run 3 miles, swim 2 x 50yrds and 2 x 300yrds for time.

24-hour qualification course sessions take place on Sundays from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Suffolk County Community College Riverhead Campus Pool.

JANUARY OCEAN LIFEGUARD PRE-CERTIFICATION COURSE

New for 2025, Suffolk County Parks will be offering a January Ocean Lifeguard pre-certification course for youth and adults interested in becoming a Suffolk County lifeguard.

The course will take place during winter break:

• Monday-Thursday evenings
• January 6-9
• January 13-16
• 7pm-10pm at the Suffolk County Community College Riverhead pool.

Candidates are required to attend at minimum of four (4) of the eight (8) qualification sessions. You must have the following qualifications:

• 16 years or older as of June 22, 2025
• Athletic skills and/or previous swimming experience
• Qualify for time in both swimming and running

Successful candidates will be eligible for Ocean Lifeguard Certification that is held in May/June 2025 to lifeguard at Smith Point and Cupsogue beaches.

PARK ATTENDANT

The Parks Department is seeking Park Attendants to perform a variety of tasks including maintenance, office work, as well as registrations and fee collections at the entrance booths. Park Attendants must be at least 16 years of age, and willing to work weekends and holidays, early and evening shifts. The main qualification for all positions is the ability to work well with the public.

PARK SECURITY AIDE

The Parks Department is seeking to hire Park Security Aides for the summer season which runs from 2 weeks before Memorial Day through Columbus Day weekend. Park Security Aides will assist Park Rangers in guarding and patrolling park areas to maintain order and preserve County property. NYS DCJS Certified Ranger Instructors will offer the required training to applicants.

PARK RANGER

Suffolk County Park Rangers are an integral part of keeping visitors safe and ensuring park rules are being followed. To become a Park Ranger, you must be a minimum of 18 years of age. Applicants will undergo a testing phase which consists of an interview with senior members of Park Ranger staff as well as passing medical, psychological, and agility tests which are administered by Suffolk County Civil Service. Individuals must also pass a background investigation which is conducted by Suffolk County Police Applicant Investigations.

Upon completion, qualified individuals are sworn in and scheduled to attend Basic Peace Officer Training, followed by field training with a Ranger Field Training Officer. The entire process can take 6-8 months.

VOLUNTEERING WITH SUFFOLK COUNTY PARKS

Group Clean ups and Volunteering for Community Hours

Suffolk County Parks welcomes organizations and student groups who wish to host clean-up days in local parks. Interested groups will need to fill out an event application and have their location approved at least two weeks in advance.

If your group is looking to earn community service hours for your project, please contact our office for additional details at SCParks@suffolkcountyny.gov.

Park Stewardship

Caring for Suffolk County’s over 60,000 acres of parkland is a formidable task, but by unanimous legislative approval, a Parks Stewardship pilot program was put into place to help with the endeavor. Individuals and groups can volunteer to assist with trash pickup, and monitoring of selected parks on an ongoing basis. Work will be coordinated and overseen by the County’s Parks Department. Park Stewards will be required to submit reports on the grounds condition and any activities or issues they may discover insuring the protection and improvements of these treasured public assets.

The Park Stewardship Program will engage community members in the conservation of parklands throughout Suffolk County. By becoming a steward of Suffolk County Parks’ green spaces, you will help ensure that our county’s natural resources are cared for and kept safe for future generations.
