Several treatments for COVID-19 are now available to those at higher risk for progression to severe disease, but not currently sick enough to require hospital care. These medications are free, but require a prescription from a healthcare provider. If you test positive for COVID-19 and are at high risk for severe illness, ask your healthcare provider if you are eligible to receive medication to treat COVID-19. If you do not have a healthcare provider, you can call 311 and ask to be connected to a communicable disease nurse who can assist you in finding care. Healthcare providers can also ask to speak with a communicable disease nurse to learn more about COVID-19 treatment options. If you are a healthcare provider, click here for more information

Those at risk for severe illness are more likely to be hospitalized, require intensive care, and may die due to COVID-19. Risk factors for severe COVID-19 infection include age over 65 and/or certain medical conditions. Find out more here.

Suffolk County reported the following information related to COVID-19 for December 16, 2024


According to CDC, hospital admission rates and the percentage of COVID-19 deaths among all deaths are now the primary surveillance metrics.

Daily Hospitalization Summary for Suffolk County – From December 16, 2024

  • 40 individuals were hospitalized
  • 70% were hospitalized due to COVID-19 or complications of COVID-19.
  • 10 new admissions since the last report.
  • 29 were discharged since the last report.
  • 7 patients were in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Note: Hospital Data is not reported on the weekend or holidays.

  • 5,357 fatalities since March 2020, An increase of 0 since last report.
    • 2020: 2,311
    • 2021: 1,507

The department offers COVID vaccines to uninsured and underinsured patients through New York State's Vaccines for Children program and Vaccines for Adults program, also known as the Bridge Access Program.
Those with insurance that covers the COVID-19 vaccine are encouraged to receive their vaccines at their local pharmacies, health care providers offices, or local federally qualified health centers.
