Update - Thirteen Beaches Close to Bathing

UPDATE

The following beaches reopened this afternoon as testing revealed bacteria have subsided to acceptable limits.

Benjamin Beach, Bay Shore – open
Tanner Park Beach, Copiague – open
Ronkonkoma Beach (Town of Islip) – open

The following beaches are newly closed to bathing due to the finding of bacteria at levels that exceed New York State standards.

Corey Beach, Blue Point
Bayport Beach, Bayport

All other beaches listed in this morning's advisory, below, remain closed.

The following beaches are closed to bathing due to the finding of bacteria at levels in excess of acceptable criteria:

Fleets Cove Beach, Huntington
Knollwood Beach, Huntington
Huntington Beach Community Assoc., Huntington
Sound Beach POA East, Sound Beach
Sound Beach POA West, Sound Beach
Beech Road Beach, Rocky Point
Broadway Beach, Rocky Point
Friendship Drive Beach, Rocky Point
Terraces on the Sound, Rocky Point
Benjamin Beach, Bay Shore – remains closed
Tides Property Owners Association Beach, Rocky Point – remains closed
Tanner Park Beach, Copiague – remains closed
Ronkonkoma Beach (Town of Islip) – remains closed

The beaches will reopen when further testing reveals that the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels.

The rainfall advisory issued on Wednesday, August 16, has been lifted.

According to Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. Gregson Pigott, bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.
