Advisory against Bathing at 23 Beaches

Benjamin Beach, Tides Beach Property Owners Association Beach and Broadway Beach remain closed

The Department of Health Services has issued an advisory against bathing at 23 beaches due to recent heavy rainfall along the North Shore of Suffolk County. The advisory is based on the potential that the levels of bacteria at these beaches exceed New York State standards.

The beaches covered by the advisory are in areas that are heavily influenced by stormwater runoff from the surrounding watersheds or adjacent tributaries, and because of their location in an enclosed embayment, experience limited tidal flushing.

Health officials recommend that bathing and other water contact be suspended in affected areas until the waters have been flushed by two successive tidal cycle—at least a 24-hour period--after the rain has ended. This advisory will be lifted on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at 7 a.m., unless sampling reveals elevated levels of bacteria persisting beyond the 24-hour period. However, more rain is forecasted for this afternoon and the advisory may be extended.

Additionally, Benjamin Beach in Bay Shore and Tides Beach Property Owners Association Beach and Broadway Beach in Rocky Point, remain closed due to elevated bacterial numbers.

List includes beaches under rainfall-related advisory for 8/20/24 and closed beaches

NOTE: To protect public health in areas that are impacted by periodic contamination, the uffolk County Department of Health Services conducts a comprehensive bathing beach water quality monitoring program from May through September at over 190 bathing beaches. Although this rainfall-related advisory is specific to bathing beaches, SCDHS recognizes that residents may recreate in surface waters outside of designated bathing beach areas.  Therefore, residents are encouraged to apply the guidance contained within these rainfall-related advisories to other areas that may be similarly influenced by stormwater runoff as well.
