Suffolk
County Health Officials announced today that the rainfall related advisory
issued yesterday, 7/26/28, has been lifted, as it has been 24 hours, or 2
successive tidal cycles since the rain has stopped.
Additionally,
the beach closure issued for Cold Spring
Harbor Beach Club Beach in the Town of Huntington, has been lifted, as
results of recent samples collected show the water quality to be within
acceptable levels.
However, the
following beaches remain closed to bathing due to the findings of bacterial
levels in excess of acceptable criteria: Amityville Village Beach, Tanner Park
Beach and Venetian Shores Beach in the Town of Babylon, Corey Beach and Shirley
Beach in the Town of Brookhaven, and the following beaches, all in the Town of
Islip: West Islip Beach, Benjamins Beach, Islip Beach, East Islip Beach, West
Oaks Recreation Club Beach, Brightwaters Village Beach, Bayport Beach, Sayville
Marina Park Beach, Bayberry Beach and Tennis Club Beach, and Lake Ronkonkoma
Islip Town Beach.
According to Suffolk County Commissioner of
Health Dr. James Tomarken, bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in
gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and
throat.
Beaches will reopen when further testing
reveals that the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels.
