County Executive
Steve Bellone Announces Free ‘Compression Only’ CPR Classes
Learn How to Save a
Life in One Hour!
Suffolk
County Executive Steve Bellone announced today that the Department Health
Services’ Division of Emergency Medical Services will conduct a series of
“Compression-Only” Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) classes. This one-hour
class is free of charge and open to persons of all ages who are capable of
compressing another person’s chest.
“Our
goal is to get as many people in Suffolk County trained in CPR as possible so
we can improve survival rates for out-of-hospital cardiac arrests,” said County
Executive Bellone. “The beauty in this method is that bystanders who
witness a cardiac arrest and may not want to perform mouth-to-mouth
resuscitation on strangers may be much more willing to perform chest-compression-only
CPR.”
“We
urge all people in Suffolk County to become CPR trained,” said Dr. James
Tomarken, Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Services. “Many of those who
experience cardiac arrest at home, work or in a public location die because
they don't receive immediate CPR from someone on the scene. CPR can vastly
improve a person’s chances of survival. This class offers an opportunity to be
prepared for such an event.”
Classes
will be offered on Wednesday August 20, 2014, starting at 7:00 p.m. at the
locations listed below. Classes are opened to all attendees, there is no
pre-registration required.
