Beaches in Babylon and Islip Closed to Bathing

Beaches in Huntington, Babylon and Islip remain closed

Tanner Park Beach in the Town of Babylon and West Oaks Recreation Club Beach, Bayport Beach, and Sayville Marina Park Beach -- all located in the Town of Islip -- are closed to bathing due to the presence of bacteria at levels that exceed acceptable criteria.

The following beaches remain closed to bathing due to the findings of bacterial levels in excess of acceptable criteria:

Venetian Shores Beach in Babylon
Islip Town Beach at Lake Ronkonkoma,
Knollwood Beach Association Beach in Huntington
Huntington Beach Community Association Beach
Centerport Yacht Club Beach
Valley Grove Beach in Huntington

According to Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. James Tomarken, bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.

Beaches will reopen when further testing reveals that the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels. Fleets Cove Beach in the Town of Huntington has reopened.

For the latest information on affected beaches, call the Bathing Beach HOTLINE at 852-5822 or contact the Department's Office of Ecology at 852-5760 during normal business hours.  http://www.suffolkcountyny.gov/Departments/HealthServices/EnvironmentalQuality/Ecology/BeachMonitoringProgram.aspx
