Steers Beach is closed to Bathing

Beaches in Towns of Huntington, Babylon and Islip remain closed

Steers Beach in Northport is closed to bathing due to the finding of bacteria at levels in excess of acceptable criteria.

Gold Star Battalion Park Beach in Huntington, Bayport Beach in Bayport, and Benjamins Beach in BayShore, which closed yesterday remain closed, as well as Huntington Beach Community Association Beach, Venetian Shores Beach in Lindenhurst, Tanner Park Beach in Copiague, and Lake Ronkonkoma-Islip Town Beach remain closed due to excess bacteria.

Beaches will reopen when further testing reveals that the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels.

According to Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. James Tomarken, bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.
