World AIDS Day 2013 Long Island

Shared Responsibility: Strengthening Results for an AIDS-Free Generation

December 1, 2013, marks the 25th annual observance of World AIDS Day. The Suffolk County Department of Health Services and its community partners encourage residents to do what they can next week to stop the spread of HIV, whether it is by getting tested, participating in outreach and educational events or donating to help find a cure. Following is a list of World AIDS Day events.

LIAAC: AIDS Education and Testing Initiative

The Long Island Association for AIDS Care will be launching a week-­‐long HIV/AIDS education and testing initiative in recognition of World AIDS Day. Staff will provide outreach and referrals and confidential HIV testing and education within Long Island’s communities as follows:

HIV Outreach, Condom Distribution and referrals

Where: Nuts n Bolts, 1083 Main St., Holbrook

When: November 30, 2013, 6 p.m.-­‐ 2 a.m.

Free and Confidential Testing

Where: The white, unmarked van parked at the Hispanic Counseling Center, 344 Fulton Ave., Hempstead

When:  Monday, December 2, 2013, 10 a.m. –1 p.m.

Where: The white, unmarked van parked at the Hempstead Bus Terminal

When:  Monday, December 2, 2013, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

HIV 101 presentation

Where: Outreach Development, 452 Suffolk Avenue, Brentwood

When: December 2, 2013, 1 p.m. -- 2 p.m.

HIV Education and Outreach

Where: North Babylon Public Library, 815 Deer Park Avenue, North Babylon

When: December 4, 2013, 12 p.m.--3 p.m.

Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth (LIGALY) and the Long Island GLBT Community Center (The Center)

During the entire month of December, LIGALY and The Center will be hosting at their Centers in Bay Shore, Sag Harbor and Garden City, educational sessions and testing events for staff and students of various local medical training institutes. These sessions will discuss the impact of HIV and AIDS, present strategies for promoting testing and care, and provide an opportunity for these professionals to test for HIV, both to familiarize themselves with an open and accepting testing process and to promote testing by example.

Free and Confidential HIV and STI Testing 

Where: The Center, 34 Park Ave., Bay Shore

When: Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. –9 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m.—12 midnight

 

Where: 44 Union Street, Sag Harbor

When: Tuesdays, 1 p.m. –9 p.m. and Thursdays, 3 p.m. –9 p.m.

Where: 400 Garden City Plaza, Suite 110, Garden City

When: Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m.—9 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m.—5 p.m.

LIMAC: Testing and Education

The Long Island Minority AIDS Coalition (LIMAC) exists to raise awareness for AIDS and HIV and bring change to the lives of those they serve in the Long Island community.  

Where: The Harm Reduction Mobile Van parks at the corner of Bedell and Main Streets in Hempstead

When: Monday, December 2, 2013, and Friday, December 6, 2013, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.

Hidden Infections: What Congregations Need to Know!

The Regional Planning Committee of the AIDS Institute invites you to learn about the spread of hidden diseases, HIV/STI and Hepatitis C, what resources are available and how congregations can educate their members and stop new infections.
Where: Holy Trinity Baptist Church: 300 Albany Avenue, Amityville

When: Monday, December 9, 2013, 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. Registration is required by December 2, 2013.

David E. Rogers MD Center World AIDS Day Event

The Hamptons Take 2 Documentary Film Festival and the David E. Rogers Center will conduct a panel discussion and screening of the film How to Survive a Plague. LIGALY and The Center will be providing HIV rapid testing during the duration of the event, in addition to providing information about HIV testing and prevention services. The event is free. Space is limited

When: Thursday, December 5, 2013, 5 p.m.

Memorial Ceremony, Dinner and Award Presentation

The United Way of Long Island and the Nassau-Suffolk Planning Council invite you to join them at the annual world aids day event 2013. The event is free and will include dinner and dancing. Transportation is not provided.

When: Friday, December 6, 2013 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. Registration is required by November 29, 2013.
