Walter S. Commerdinger, Jr. settled in Nesconset in the early 1900's when his father, WSC, Senior, purchased a parcel of land on Lake Avenue. Walter, Senior was very active in Community Affairs. From the 1920's through the 1930's he was appointed the Smithtown Town Assessor. Walter's mother was a member of the Crolius Family, who were one of the first potters established in New York City in the early 1700's.

After serving in France during World War I, Walter, Junior returned home and purchased the Nesconset General Store and Post Office. He became the second Nesconset Postmaster in 1926 and served until 1933 and then again from 1946 through 1959.

Walter S. Commerdinger, Jr., like his father before him, was very active in local government and community affairs. As a charter member of various organizations he was instrumental in their growth into significant community factions.

W.S. Commerdinger, Jr. County Park - For generations the Commerdinger Family owned all the land north of Lake Ronkonkoma. That land today is known as the Lily Ponds Park & Nature Preserve. An area, which is to remain natural and preserved forever thanks to the generosity and foresight of the Commerdinger Family. Until recent times, the Commerdinger family still lived on a 5.7 - Acre parcel within the 90 acre preserve. Developers were looking to snatch it up, clear the land and put in multiple housing. In 2006, with the coordinated efforts of the County and the Commerdinger family the land's preservation was secured. Title to that last piece of the property has passed into the County Parks domain. Stewardship for the property will be shared by both the County Parks Department and the WS Commerdinger, Jr. County Park Preservation Society.
