- Wear Safety vests and gloves (required).
- Wear light colored clothing that covers arms and legs.
- Wear substantial footwear, boots, etc., and watch your footing.
- Park all vehicles ON the roadside shoulder that is being cleaned. Car pool to reduce the number of vehicles. Park all vehicles as far as possible from the traveling lanes.
- Be sure warning signs are in place with an unrestricted view.
- Work one side of the road at a time.
- Face on-coming traffic.
- Stay at least 5’ from the edge of the road and stay alert at all times.
- Furnish adequate supervision by one or more adults (21 years or older) for groups that include participants under 17 (required).
- Work only during daylight hours. Discontinue work in rain, snow, fog, or other inclement conditions.
- Be alert to ticks, stinging insects and poisonous plants and animals.
- Don’t wear clothing or apparatus that might impair vision or hearing.
- Don’t wear clothing or display material that might distract motorists.
- Don’t pick up trash on medians, on bridges or on overpasses.
- Aside from the above, no other signage is permitted.
SPECIAL NOTE:
Use or possession of illegal drugs or alcohol during the clean up is forbidden. Do not remove hazardous objects (syringes, needles or chemicals). Contact the Highway Maintenance Division (631) 852-4070 if such materials need to be removed.
IN CASE OF EMERGENCY
Have a First Aid Kit readily available. Know the route from your cleanup location to the nearest Emergency Room or Hospital. Have transportation immediately available.
