HAUPPAUGE, NY -- Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine and Acting Police Commissioner Robert Waring today announced the promotion of 68 members of the Suffolk County Police Department. The decision also adds 24 detectives to the force.
“The safety of our communities continues to remain one of my top priorities. That is why it is critical that we have officers of the highest caliber leading the Suffolk County Police Department,” said Romaine. “This is a tremendous organization, and I know each one of these men and women will do their part to continue to make this Police Department one of the finest law enforcement agencies in the nation.”
“These promotions provide a well-deserved opportunity to sworn members who are ready to take another important step in their law enforcement careers,” Suffolk County Police Acting Commissioner Robert Waring said. “Both our patrol and detective divisions will be enhanced, and these individuals will continue to play a critical role in fighting crime, promoting public safety, and serving the community.”
After the department has seen its ranks dwindle due to retirements, and funded positions in the department left vacant by the Bellone Administration, Romaine and Waring have moved quickly to put experienced, qualified personnel into those positions. The positions filled include one Chief, one Deputy Chief, three Deputy Inspectors, one Captain, six Lieutenants, two Detective Sergeants, 30 Sergeants and 24 Detectives.
“I made a promise to make Suffolk County safer, and working with Commissioner Waring and his top staff, we have taken this step to provide the department by filling key roles,” said Romaine. “We cannot tackle the growing threat of the opioid epidemic, violent crimes and theft without a police department that is properly staffed and trained.”
