Romaine Announces Suffolk’s ‘America 250’ Celebration Marking Anniversary of Declaration of Independence

Suffolk kicks off countdown to milestone anniversary with Revolutionary War reenactors, colonial music, and live musket demonstrations

Hauppauge, NY – Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine was joined by local officials, community members, historical societies and members of the County’s 250th Anniversary Commemorative Planning Committee to officially launch Suffolk County’s “America 250” celebration — a bi-county initiative marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and Suffolk’s part in America’s history.

“Suffolk County played a pivotal role in the American Revolution,” said County Executive Romaine. “As we prepare to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, we are proud to honor our local history and the stories that helped shape our nation.”

The kickoff took place at the historic Sagtikos Manor, where President George Washington spent the night on April 21, 1790, and once served as British military headquarters on Long Island. The event featured costumed reenactors, colonial music, musket-firing militias, and food prepared from Martha Washington’s original cookbook.

Suffolk County’s America 250 campaign will include a variety of events throughout the region to celebrate the once-in-a-generation milestone. Residents are also encouraged to participate in the Long Island 250 Passport Book program to explore the region’s rich Revolutionary War heritage – further information about the Passport Book program will be announced at a later date.

Residents are encouraged to visit suffolk250.org periodically for more information and for a list of local events.
