The
Peconic Estuary Program Management Committee has scheduled:
A Full-Day
Strategic Planning Meeting on November 17, 2017.
Time: 10:00 am to
4:00 pm
Location: Seatuck
Environmental Association- Suffolk County Environmental Center
550 South Bay Avenue,
Islip, NY 11751
We will be discussing the
EPA's findings for the Peconic Estuary Program's 2017 Program Evaluation
and facilitate a discussion on ways to address these issues.
The evaluation of the PEP is
conducted by the EPA every 5 years with the primary purpose being to help EPA
determine whether the 28 National Estuary Programs are making adequate progress
implementing their Comprehensive Conservation Management Plans (CCMP). As we
discussed at the September PEP Management Committee meeting, it is mostly
complimentary, but does identify some important challenges and lays out a
timeline in which we are being asked to develop and then implement a plan to
address those challenges.
The Peconic Estuary is part
of the National Estuary Program (NEP), which aims to protect and preserve
nationally significant estuaries that are threatened by pollution, development,
or overuse. The Peconic Estuary was named an “estuary of national significance”
in 1992.
The Peconic Estuary Program is sponsored by the United States Environmental
Protection Agency, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation,
and the Suffolk County Department of Health Services (SCDHS). SCDHS operates
the program office and provides the day-to-day management functions and the
technical and administrative support to the program.
