Benjamin's Beach, located
in the Town of Islip, is closed to bathing due to the finding of bacteria at
levels in excess of acceptable criteria. Tanner Park Beach in Babylon and Lake
Ronkonkoma Islip Town Beach, remain closed.
According
to Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. James Tomarken, bathing in
bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as
infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.
Beaches will reopen when further testing
reveals that the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels.
West Oaks
Recreation Club Beach, Bayberry Beach & Tennis Club Beach, Shirley Beach,
Bayport Beach, Tides Beach, Valley Grove Beach, and Prices Bend Beach, which
closed earlier this week, have reopened, as results of samples collected show
the water quality to be within acceptable levels.

Beach HOTLINE at 852-5822 or contact the Department's Office of Ecology at
