Islip Beaches Reopen; Amityville Village Beach Closes to Bathing
The beach closures issued for Sayville Marina Park Beach in Sayville, Bayport Beach in Bayport, and Benjamins Beach in Bay Shore have been lifted, as results of recent samples collected show the water quality to be within acceptable levels.
Amityville Village Beach is closed to bathing due to the finding of bacterial levels in excess of acceptable criteria.
According to Commissioner of Health James L. Tomarken, MD, MPH, MBA, MSW, immersion in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.
For the latest information on affected beaches, call the Bathing Beach HOTLINE at 852-5822, contact the Department's Office of Ecology at 852-5760 during normal business hours, or visit the website at www.suffolkcountyny.gov/health. Or http://gis2.suffolkcountyny.gov/bathingbeaches/
