Great Pond at Peconic Dunes Camp in Peconic is closed due to the finding of bacteria at levels that exceed New York State standards. This is the second time this month the camp beach has been closed due to high levels of bacteria. The camp beach had been closed on August 12 and reopened on August 17, 2015, at which time levels of bacteria had met with New York State standards.
Tanner Park Beach, which closed on August 17, 2015, remains closed to bathing.
According to Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. James Tomarken, bathing in water contaminated with bacteria can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.
