Bellone Applauds Approval of $1.7 Million in Infrastructure Improvements for Wyandanch Rising

One of the most economically distressed communities in Suffolk County receives support for the development of affordable rental housing

(Hauppauge, New York- March 21, 2013) On March 19th, the Suffolk County Legislature approved $1.7 million in funding for infrastructure improvements to support the development of affordable rental housing in the hamlet of Wyandanch.  This housing project is part of a comprehensive plan, Wyandanch Rising, to revitalize one of the most economically distressed communities in Suffolk County.

Wyandanch Rising is a major community revitalization initiative that encompasses the creation of a transit-oriented development centered around the Wyandanch Train Station.  The public/private partnership will include residential, retail, mixed-use and municipal

“These funds will help leverage millions of dollars to build critically needed affordable rental housing,” said County Executive Bellone.  “This project will create jobs and help increase the community’s commercial tax base.”

“Wyandanch Rising will not only revitalize and rebuild a community that too often has been undervalued by critics, but the investments made here today will pay dividends. Not only of a monetary nature, but also by enhancing the social fabric of this community,” says Legislative Majority Leader DuWayne Gregory (district 15, D-Amityville) who represents the area.

The project is a five story mixed use development with 91 units of rental residences on four floors, above a floor of retail and residential common areas.  The rental units present an array of one-bedroom; two-bedroom and three bedroom units targeted for a mix of incomes with 60 of the units designated as affordable to households earning up to 90% HUD Area Median Income.  The infrastructure improvements will include: site prep, residential parking, curbs, sidewalks, lighting, drainage and landscaping.

This project is the first constructed development under the Wyandanch Rising project and will be followed by a second mixed use building in addition to subsequent phases that will include:  commercial office, retail buildings both owner occupied and rental units.

The Wyandanch Rising project has received Federal, State and local support in the form of grants and awards and was recognized by the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council as a “transformative” project.  Similar types of funding have been authorized by the Suffolk County Legislature to support projects such as:  New Village, Patchogue Village, NY, Cortland Square, Bay Shore, NY, Cooper Beech, Patchogue Village, NY and Millennium Hills, Melville, New York.
