Hauppauge, NY-July 30, 2013) Today, 12 members of the Suffolk County Legislature voted in favor of putting a referendum on the November ballot to merge the offices of Treasurer and Comptroller into a new elected Chief Financial Officer. The consolidation would save more than $833,000 and improve efficiency. County Executive Bellone made the following statement:
“I applaud the majority of the Suffolk County Legislature for voting to give Suffolk County residents the opportunity to consolidate government and save nearly $1 million per year. Suffolk County is the only county in New York State to have separate elected offices for Comptroller and Treasurer. With our fiscal crisis, it is critical that we look at all opportunities where we can consolidate departments, improve efficiency and protect Suffolk County taxpayers.”
