Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today released the following statement in response to the New York State Legislature adopting legislation to combat gun violence.
“As the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to hear a landmark case that could impact millions of New Yorkers and threatens to reverse local government measures that seek to prevent gun violence, it is now more important than ever that New York State fight back.
"After years of unnecessary delay, today the New York State Senate Majority and New York State Assembly Majority passed a litany of common sense gun safety measures with bipartisan support. By banning bump stocks, limiting the possessions of firearms on school grounds, creating uniform regulations for gun buyback programs and allowing for the review of out-of-state mental health records, we are sending a message across this state that we will do what it takes to protect our neighbors.
"I applaud Governor Cuomo, Senate Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins, and Assembly Speaker Heastie for leading the nation to combat gun violence and working to prevent tragedies from occurring in the first place."
