Suffolk County health officials have closed Crab Meadow Beach in the Town of Huntington; Amityville Village Beach, Tanner Park Beach and Venetian Shores Beach in the Town of Babylon; Benjamins Beach in the Town of Islip, and Cory Beach in the Town of Brookhaven due to the finding of bacteria at levels that exceed acceptable criteria.
Valley Grove Beach and Centerport Yacht Club Beach in the Town of Huntington closed on Wednesday and remain closed as levels of bacteria continue to exceed acceptable criteria.
According to Suffolk County Health Commissioner Dr. James Tomarken, bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.
The beaches will reopen when further testing reveals that the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels.
