Statement From suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone on Legislative Passage of Brianna's Law

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today praised the passage of Brianna’s Law in the New York State Assembly that will enact common sense boating safety legislation across the state. The legislation also passed in the New York State Senate this session. The measure is named in honor of 11-year-old Brianna Lieneck, who tragically died in 2005 after a boat crash in the Great South Bay. Gina Lieneck, Brianna’s mother, has been working for years to pass "Brianna's Law," which would require mandatory boating safety classes for mariners of all ages in a phased-in period.

“By turning tragedy into triumph, Gina Lieneck succeeded in convincing the State to make our waterways safer for all New Yorkers,”said Suffolk County Executive Bellone.  “I commend Assembly Speaker Heastie and Senate Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins for listening to voices like Gina so that we can help prevent these types of tragedies from ever occurring in the first place.”
