Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today attended a ceremony to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day Invasion at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in Colleville-sur-Mer, France. The Cemetery is the resting place of more than 9,000 Americans, most of whom lost their lives as part of the D-Day landings. The County Executive was joined by other officials, including Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi and Congressman Lee Zeldin.
“D-Day was one of the most significant military operations in history, a decisive turning point that secured the freedom of the world,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “As we mark this historic milestone, it is our profound duty to ensure that we never forget the sacrifice of the greatest generation who stormed the beaches 75 years ago and that we pass on the lessons of these heroic veterans to our children and future generations.”
Over the course of the last month, County Executive Bellone toured the County meeting with World War II Veterans, raising an American flag at the Long Island National Cemetery, Calverton National Cemetery, Babylon Memorial Elementary School, and Long Island State Veterans Home. Today, the County Executive raised the same flag in Normandy, France to pay tribute to the heroes that stormed the beaches 75 years ago.
Once returned home, this flag will be raised every June 6 at the H. Lee Dennison Building to honor all who have served our nation. With nearly 90,000 veterans residing in Suffolk County, the County is home to the largest veterans’ population in New York State.
