Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Health Commissioner James Tomarken announced today that the Suffolk County Department of Health Services (SCDHS) is ramping up its Shots for Tots program this month and encouraging residents to make sure that they and their children are up to date on their vaccinations, especially since the beginning of the school year is quickly approaching.
“Immunizations are one of greatest accomplishments of the 20th Century,” said Bellone. “Vaccines protect not only the immunized individuals but also the entire community.”
Dr. Tomarken noted, “Immunizations are important throughout life and are the safest most cost-effective ways to prevent disease. We encourage families and adults, especially those with particular health conditions, to make sure that they are being protected against flu, pertussis, hepatitis and many other preventable and potentially deadly diseases. ”
Residents are encouraged to check with their health care providers to make sure they have all the shots they need. For those families without health insurance or whose insurance does not cover immunizations, the county offers Shots for Tots clinics, which are part of the nationwide Immunization Action Program. Below is the schedule of clinics scheduled for the month of August.
