IAP Mission

Our Mission

The mission of the Suffolk County Immunization Action Program (IAP) is to ensure that children in Suffolk County are fully immunized by their second birthday and for clearance to attend school until age 18; and that all infants born of hepatitis B positive mothers are appropriately identified, treated and tracked. To comply with this mission, the Department holds immunization clinics at easily accessible locations throughout Suffolk County, conducts immunization audits in private provider's offices and nursery/day care centers, conducts educational programs for health care professionals and stakeholder members in the community, and responds to immunization questions.

Services

The IAP provides the following services:

  • Community vaccination clinics: The IAP holds regular immunization clinics throughout the year at accessible locations across Suffolk County. These clinics are geared toward un- and under-insured children and adults.
  • Vaccination provider audits: Through the Immunization Quality Improvement Program (IQIP), IAP assists with quality improvement for Suffolk County providers who participate in the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program for un/under-insured children. The IAP audits 25% of the VFC-private providers in Suffolk County annually and works with these practices to improve their pediatric vaccination rates.
  • School and daycare visits: The IAP conducts on-site school training and technical assistance visits with 5-8 schools annually and audits 1-3 daycare centers annually, to help them improve their compliance with NYS requirements for maintenance of student vaccination records and management of students who are out of compliance.
  • Education & outreach: IAP provides education regarding pediatric immunization schedules and regulations to healthcare providers, daycare and pre-K providers, parents/guardians, and other community members.
  • Adult vaccination promotion: IAP visits 10 healthcare providers serving adult populations each year, to promote increasing adult immunization rates and encourage reporting of adult vaccines in the New York State Immunization Information System (NYSIIS). In conjunction with the Nassau-Suffolk Immunization Coalition, IAP works on projects aimed at increasing rates of adult immunization.
  • Perinatal hepatitis B prevention: Pregnant people infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection can pass the virus to their infant at birth, posing a serious risk to the infant’s health. Fortunately, perinatal hepatitis B transmission can be prevented by routinely testing pregnant people for hepatitis B, and providing pregnant people with hepatitis B and their newborn infants with appropriate treatment and vaccination. IAP activities related to perinatal hepatitis B include identification and tracking of hepatitis B-positive mothers and their infants, ensuring that these infants have received appropriate management, and providing community education and/or professional training to promote perinatal hepatitis B awareness.
