Public Safety

The Suffolk County Police Department started operations on January 1,1960, with a total force of 619 sworn officers. Currently there are over 2,700 sworn members, well over 600 civilian members and almost 400 School Crossing Guards.

The department provides all police services for the Suffolk County Police District, comprised of the five western towns of Babylon, Brookhaven, Huntington, Islip, and Smithtown.

Suffolk County has a population of over 1.5 million and our entire staff works tirelessly to serve and protect our residents through innovative programs to reduce inmate recidivism, by promoting sound fiscal policies and by working cooperatively with law enforcement and community groups throughout the county to improve safety in our jails and our neighborhoods.

The Suffolk County Sheriff`s Office also plays a significant role in patrolling our roadways; Sheriff`s Deputies are out in force all year long throughout the county.

The Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services (FRES) is committed today to serving the residents of Suffolk County and the emergency responders who are dedicated to saving lives and protecting property.

The administration section provides personnel and financial management, coordinates the Deputy County Fire Coordinators program, and operates the county's mobile fire rescue command post.

The Office of Emergency Management (OEM) coordinates the county's response to natural and manmade disasters. OEM personnel are responsible for the operation of the county's Emergency Operation Center (EOC) and work with local, state, and federal officials in shelter management, planning, resource management, and radiological response coordination.

The Division of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) provides education and support to the Suffolk County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) agencies, and coordinates the components of the Emergency Medical Services system. Every year the division attempts tp increase emergency preparedness efforts, coordinated educational offerings with quality improvement efforts, expanded educational opportunities, and continued to focus on EMS system quality improvement in conjunction with the Regional Emergency Medical Services Council (REMSCO).

The Suffolk County Probation Department acknowledge that we serve in a dual role of community protection and client assistance. Our protective role entails community supervision of offenders and investigation of offenders prior to sentencing by the Court. In our client assistance role, we provide services to deal with family and community disputes.
