Consumer Complaints may review customer issues regarding home improvements, furniture purchases and misleading advertisements.
Investigators are assigned to all cases which fall within the jurisdiction of the department. Complaints that are handled by other agencies are referred to the proper party. Investigators often visit homes to examine defective merchandise or improper workmanship. They also engage in surveillance activities, such as checking for the availability of advertised items.
Each investigator has developed an expertise in several common complaint categories such as retail, furniture, carpet and unconscionable trade practices.
Consumer Complaints also monitors the proper disclosure of refund policies in response to complaints and investigates to ensure compliance with the County's Deceptive Trade Practices regulation.
Intake personnel verify the licensing status of contractors and supply callers with information regarding the amount of complaints against a company within the past 5 years and if the complaints are open or closed. For assistance you may call (631) 853-4600 Monday through Friday, from 9am to 4 pm.
Note: To initiate a complaint, you must complete and sign the complaint form and then send it back to us with the required documentation. Before you file a complaint, please make sure you have made an effort to settle your complaint directly with the company. Also, please be advised that a copy of your complaint will, most likely, be forwarded to the vendor you have filed the complaint against. Complaints that do not fall within our jurisdiction, such as car repairs or insurance complaints, will be forwarded to the appropriate regulatory agency.
