The Suffolk County Office of the Medical Examiner’s Office (SCOME) supports the continuing education of students interested in the field of Forensic Science. SCOME has opportunities that can allow interns to work side by side with Laboratory professionals (including forensic scientists specializing in drug chemistry, biological sciences [DNA Analysis], firearms examination, toxicology and trace evidence. The internship program can allow students to observe an autopsy examination, assist in the forensic laboratories and gain knowledge of forensic investigative techniques.
Applicants for a SCOME internship must be:
18 years or older
In at least their 3rd or 4th year of undergraduate work
Enrolled in one of the following natural science areas or related areas of study:
- Biochemistry
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Forensic Science
- Genetics
- Microbiology
- Molecular Biology
- Physics
- Toxicology
Internships are typically held during summer break. Qualified candidates can mail or email an Internship Application along with their resume, cover letter, two (2) professional/academic letters of reference and a copy of the curriculum/syllabus from the course that requires an internship (if applicable) by March 1st to:

All applicants are reviewed by the Internship coordinators and interns are accepted on a case by case basis. Acceptance is dependent on laboratory needs, the number of students applying, the presentation of your resume and your letters of recommendation. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Priority will be given to those students seeking internships to earn college credit. Qualified applicants will be contacted by the internship coordinators for an in person meeting/interview prior to acceptance into the intern program.
